Carilion Biomedical Institute Names Chief Operating Officer, Hires Additional Staff

Former WorldCom project manager will focus on new business development

ROANOKE, Va., (January 2, 2003) Daniel Barchi will join Carilion Biomedical Institute (CBI) on January 6, 2003 as Chief Operating Officer. Barchi is formerly the director of Technology and Engineering for WorldCom, Inc. He is certified as a Professional Manager of Projects and holds a Master of Engineering Management from Old Dominion University. Barchi began his technology career as a Communications Officer in the Navy, managing communications, weapons and sonar development and Air Warfare tactics.

According to CBI President Dennis Fisher, Barchi will use his management and technology skills to channel medical technology developed at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech into possible start-up companies. CBI already has one such company in Charlottesville. BioPhile Inc. manufactures automated storage and retrieval systems for biological samples.

“His experience evaluating new technologies and business opportunities at WorldCom will give us an edge as we chose medical technologies to move into production,” Fisher said.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” said Barchi, who is married to a Roanoke native. “I look forward to working with people throughout the Roanoke and New River valleys to promote science, business and economic development.”

Joining Barchi on the CBI team are Business Development Consultants Webb Burns and Cheryl Valentine. Both have recently received MBAs from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business Administration. Their work will include investigating markets and building financial models for prospective businesses and evaluating new investment opportunities.
