Andre A. Muelenaer, Jr., M.D.

Medical Director



 

Dr. Andre Muelenaer joined Carilion Biomedical Institute as Medical Director in February 2001 and was a member of the Institute Coordinating Council, which formed the Institute in January 2000. Dr. Muelenaer is responsible for the overall strategic medical direction of the institute which includes new biomedical product and service research, development and commercialization and medical relevance due diligence.

Prior to joining CBI, Dr. Muelenaer was the Director of Pediatric Pulmonology for the Carilion Health System for nearly ten years. He maintains a part-time pediatric pulmonology practice and holds academic teaching appointments at the University of Virginia and Radford University. Dr. Muelenaer has a strong background in clinical research and has published and presented findings on infant apnea and related subjects.

Dr. Muelenaer holds a BS and an MS degree from Virginia Tech, where his studies were concentrated in biologic applications within biomedical engineering and he completed a pediatric pulmonary research fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  His first academic appointment was at Duke University Medical Center, where he was acting Chief in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonlogy and Gasroenterology, and Director of the BS Blackard Center for Hypoventilation Research.

Dr. Muelenaer sits on the board of directors for the Child Health Investment Partnership, the American Lung Association of Virginia, the American Association of SIDS Prevention Physicians, the Virginia's Early Learning Council and is the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for CitiHope International.

Dr. Muelenaer has held many leadership positions within the Carilion Health System and the United States Army Reserve Medical Corp.
